Pivot Entrance Doors from Poland to Ireland: Oversized Leaves, Pivot Hardware and Cladding

At a glance: pivot entrance doors from Poland

  • ๐Ÿ”„ It turns on an axis, not on hinges: the leaf rotates on a top and bottom pivot set in from the edge, which is what makes very wide, very tall leaves possible.
  • ๐Ÿ—๏ธ The floor is part of the door: most pivot hardware sits in a recess in the floor, so it has to be coordinated with the slab, insulation and screed long before delivery.
  • ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Big leaf, big seal: a large leaf has a long perimeter to seal, so ask for the performance of the complete doorset, not a brochure photo.
  • ๐Ÿšš Heavy to move, simple to ship: pivot leaves travel crated on the same consolidated load as the windows, but site handling needs planning.

When a standard front door is not enough

Last week's guide to aluminium entrance doors covered the standard hinged front door: thermally broken frame, insulated panel, security class and threshold. On architect-designed Irish self-builds, though, the drawings increasingly show something bigger at the front elevation โ€” a floor-to-ceiling door, often clad in timber, that swings on a pivot rather than on hinges.

The pivot door is a specialist product, but it comes from the same Polish factories that already build aluminium entrance doors and window systems. That means it can be quoted on the same schedule, matched to the windows in colour and finish, and delivered on the same load, rather than bought separately from a boutique supplier with a long lead time.

1. How a pivot door works and why it changes the specification

A conventional door hangs on hinges at one edge, and the weight of the leaf pulls on that edge. A pivot door instead rotates on a pivot point at the top and bottom, usually set some distance in from the edge of the leaf. The weight goes straight down into the floor-mounted pivot, which is why pivot leaves can be much wider and taller than a hinged door of the same construction.

That offset axis creates the look โ€” part of the leaf swings inward and part swings outward when the door opens โ€” and it also creates the practical rules:

  • Leaf size: oversized leaves are the point of the product, but every manufacturer has size limits for a given panel construction and colour. Dark finishes on sunny elevations are the usual constraint, so ask for the size limits for your chosen colour before the architect finalises the opening.
  • Pivot hardware: most systems use a hydraulic pivot recessed into the floor, with controlled closing speed and, on some systems, a hold-open position. Heavier leaves need a heavier-duty pivot, and the hardware rating should be stated against the actual leaf weight.
  • Opening zone: the part of the leaf that swings outward needs clear space outside, and the part that swings inward needs clear space in the hall. Check both against steps, porches and furniture on the drawings.

2. Cladding, sealing and performance

The core of a modern pivot door is usually an insulated aluminium or composite leaf, with the finish applied to it: powder-coated aluminium, HPL, real timber, stone veneer or ceramic. The finish is what the client sees, but it adds weight and determines maintenance. Real timber on an exposed west-facing Irish elevation will need re-oiling on a schedule; a timber-effect powder coat or HPL will not, and from the street most visitors will not tell the difference.

Sealing is where pivot doors have traditionally been weaker than hinged doors, because a long leaf rotating around a central axis is harder to seal evenly along its perimeter. Good systems handle this with multiple gasket lines, a drop-down seal at the bottom and a carefully detailed threshold. Ask for the documented U-value and air permeability of the complete doorset at your size โ€” both matter on an nZEB or passive-house project where the front door is part of the airtightness line.

The fix: agree the floor build-up with the door manufacturer before the slab and screed go in. The pivot box needs a recess of a specific depth at a specific position, and it has to sit alongside the floor insulation, any underfloor heating and the finished floor level. Cutting a recess into a finished screed, or discovering the pivot box clashes with UFH pipe, is the most common and most expensive pivot-door mistake.

3. Security, locking, sizing and delivery

Security and locking. Pivot doors can take multi-point locks, motorised locks and access control just like standard entrance doors, but not every size and configuration has been tested to a security class. If a resistance class (such as RC2) is required, confirm that it applies to your leaf size and configuration, not just to the system in general. As with any electric lock, get power and data to the frame at first fix.

Wind. A large leaf catches the wind. On exposed Irish sites, specify a pivot with controlled closing and, where offered, a restricted opening angle, so the door cannot be swung hard against its stop in a gust.

Sizing and order data. Pivot doors are made to the structural opening. The order needs the opening dimensions, the pivot offset position, the opening direction, the finished floor level, the wall build-up (ETICS, ventilated facade or masonry with cladding) and the chosen finish on each face.

Documentation and delivery. Ask for CE marking, the Declaration of Performance, the whole-doorset U-value and any security or weather-tightness test results at your size. Pivot leaves are heavy and are shipped crated, often with the pivot hardware packed separately. They consolidate onto the same load as the windows and entrance doors, but plan for mechanical lifting or enough people on site to handle the crate.

Door type Leaf size Best at What to confirm
Pivot door, aluminium/composite leaf Very wide and tall Statement front elevations Size limits for colour, pivot rating, floor recess
Pivot door, real timber cladding Very wide and tall Natural finish, architect-led designs Maintenance schedule, weight, exposure
Oversized hinged aluminium door Tall, moderate width Contemporary look with a simpler install Hinge rating, U-value, threshold
Standard hinged entrance door Standard Most homes, cost-led projects Panel type, security class, locking
