Aluminium Entrance Doors from Poland to Ireland: Panels, Thermal Break and Security

At a glance: aluminium entrance doors from Poland

  • ๐Ÿšช The panel, not the profile, is the product: an entrance door is a thermally broken frame plus an insulated panel, and the panel type decides how the finished door looks from the street.
  • ๐Ÿ”’ Security is a class, not an adjective: ask for the resistance class (RC2, RC3) and the locking specification in writing, rather than accepting "reinforced" on a quotation.
  • ๐Ÿ”Œ Electric locks need first-fix power: motorised locks, keypads and fingerprint readers all need a cable to the frame before the plasterer arrives.
  • ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Irish exposure is the real test: a low threshold on a west-facing door with no canopy is where driving rain finds the weakness.

The one opening everybody photographs

Last week's guide to external roller shutters and facade blinds dealt with the glazed elevation at the back of the house. The front elevation has a smaller and much more visible problem: a single opening that has to be warm, secure, weathertight and the thing visitors look at first.

Polish manufacturers are strong here for the same reason they are strong in shutters โ€” the aluminium entrance door comes out of factories that already build window systems on the same profile families. In practice that means the front door can be quoted on the same schedule as the windows, matched to them in colour, and arrive on the same load instead of being ordered separately and late.

1. What you are actually buying: frame plus panel

An aluminium entrance door is two things bought as one. There is a thermally broken aluminium frame and sash โ€” the same insulated-profile principle as an aluminium window โ€” and there is an insulated door panel fixed into it, typically a thick foam-cored sandwich panel rather than the glass unit a window carries.

How that panel meets the sash is the decision that changes the look:

  • Overlay panel: the panel covers the sash on the outside face (sometimes both faces), so from the street you see a flat slab of door with no visible frame around it. This is the modern, flush look, and it is what most contemporary Irish self-builds are actually asking for.
  • Inlay panel: the panel sits inside the sash, leaving a visible aluminium border around it. More traditional in appearance, usually cheaper, and perfectly reasonable on a side or utility entrance.

Then come the parts people forget to price: glazed inserts in the panel, sidelights and fanlights, the pull handle (a long bar handle is usually a separate line item), and the finish. Colour is a powder-coat RAL reference and can be different inside and out โ€” a common and inexpensive choice is anthracite outside against a white or timber-effect inside face.

2. Security, locking and access control

This is where quotations diverge most and where the wording matters. European entrance doors are classified for burglar resistance in classes โ€” RC2 and RC3 are the ones that come up on housing โ€” and the class applies to the whole doorset as tested: panel, frame, locking, hinges and, if there is glazing, the glass. Asking for "a secure door" gets you an adjective; asking for a resistance class and the accompanying documentation gets you a product.

Underneath the class sit the components you should see itemised: a multi-point lock with hook or deadbolt engagements, the cylinder specification, reinforced hinges, and increasingly a motorised or automatic lock that throws the bolts as the door closes. On top of that sits access control โ€” keypad, fingerprint reader, smart lock or video intercom.

The fix that costs nothing at first fix: decide the locking and access control before the electrician is finished, and get a cable to the door frame. Motorised locks, readers and intercoms all need power (and often a data run), and the cable has to reach the frame, with a transfer loop into the moving sash. Retrofitting that after the reveal is plastered means opening the reveal again, and it is one of the most common avoidable costs on an otherwise well-run job.

3. Threshold, exposure, sizing and delivery

Threshold. A low or flush threshold is a genuine accessibility win and the default request on new builds. It is also the weak point in wind-driven rain, so specify a thermally broken threshold with proper drainage and be realistic about exposure: a west-facing door on an open site with no porch or canopy is a harder job than the same door under a recessed entrance. Where the door is truly exposed, either accept a slightly higher threshold or design the shelter in.

Sizing. Entrance doors are made to the structural opening, not to a catalogue size, so the order needs the opening dimensions, the handing (which side the hinges are on), the opening direction โ€” inward is standard on most Irish homes, outward is possible โ€” and whether sidelights or a fanlight are part of the same frame. Confirm the wall build-up too: on an ETICS or ventilated facade the frame position within the reveal changes the fixing and the insulation detail around it.

Documentation and delivery. Ask for CE marking and the Declaration of Performance, the whole-door U-value (the figure for the complete doorset, not the panel core in isolation), and the resistance class certificate if you specified one. For coastal Irish sites, ask specifically what powder-coating specification is offered and what warranty comes with it โ€” salt exposure is a genuine variable and the answer differs between manufacturers. Delivery is straightforward: entrance doors are crated or carried on A-frames alongside the window package and consolidate onto the same load.

Door type Typical look Best at What to confirm
Aluminium, overlay panel Flush, frameless from outside Contemporary front elevations Panel thickness, RAL inside/out, U-value
Aluminium, inlay panel Visible frame border Side and utility entrances, budget Panel spec, handle, threshold
PVC entrance door Framed, traditional Cost-led projects, rentals Reinforcement, locking, colour range
Steel security door Plain or panelled Apartments, back-of-house Resistance class, fire rating if required
