At a glance: timber-look entrance doors
- 🪵 Three routes to a timber look: solid or engineered timber, wood-aluminium composite, or a wood-effect finish on aluminium or steel.
- 🌧️ Irish weather is the deciding factor: exposed timber needs protection from rain and sun, while a composite or effect finish needs far less care.
- 🎨 Pair the door with the facade: timber tones sit well against concrete, dark cladding and slat screens.
- 🧰 Maintenance should be agreed upfront: coating system, recoat interval and warranty conditions vary widely.
A warmer front door
In recent posts we covered the aluminium entrance door, pivot doors, door hardware and the threshold and landing. Many clients then ask a design question: can we have the warmth of timber on the front door without the upkeep that comes with it?
Polish manufacturers offer several answers, and each suits a different level of exposure and maintenance. This guide compares them so you can match the door to the site.
1. Solid timber, wood-aluminium or wood-effect?
- Solid or engineered timber: the most authentic look and feel. Needs a good factory coating and periodic recoating, and is best protected by a deep canopy or porch.
- Wood-aluminium composite: timber on the inside and an aluminium shell outside, so the warm look is kept indoors and the weather side is low-maintenance. A good choice for exposed Irish elevations.
- Wood-effect on aluminium or steel: a foil or powder-coated wood-grain finish on a stable core. The most weather-resistant and consistent option, with realistic grain at a lower maintenance cost.
Ask the manufacturer for the construction build-up, the coating or finish system, the declared thermal performance of the complete door (U-value) and the warranty conditions, particularly for the finish.

2. Weather, orientation and detailing
Timber and finishes age differently depending on how exposed the door is.
- South and west faces take the most sun and rain, which can fade or crack surface coatings. A canopy or recessed porch helps considerably, as covered in our canopy guide.
- Dark colours absorb heat; ask whether the chosen shade is approved for the door construction to avoid warping.
- End grain and edges are where moisture enters timber leaves, so check they are sealed on all sides, including the bottom edge.
- Glazing and inserts such as the horizontal glass inset in the image must be sealed to the same standard as the rest of the leaf.
The fix: request a physical sample or finish chip in the exact species and colour, view it outdoors in daylight next to your cladding or render, and get the maintenance interval and warranty terms confirmed in writing before the order.
3. Matching the facade and keeping it looking good
Coordinate the finishes. Timber-look doors pair naturally with fair-faced concrete, dark brick and stone, and with vertical timber slat screens like those in our wall panelling guide. Frames, letterboxes and handles in matching dark or stainless finishes keep the look consistent.
Plan the upkeep. Solid timber typically needs periodic cleaning and recoating; composite and effect finishes usually need only washing. Ask for written care instructions and approved cleaning products.
Security and performance. The look should not lower the specification: confirm the lock system, the glazing and the sealing performance are the same as on the equivalent plain door.
Documentation and delivery. Request the DoP, CE marking and care instructions in English, and confirm any timber sourcing certification you need. Doors and matching panels travel together on one consolidated load, packed to protect the finish.
| Option | Best for | Trade-off | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid / engineered timber | Sheltered porches, traditional or premium homes | Regular recoating | Coating system, species, warranty |
| Wood-aluminium composite | Exposed elevations wanting warm interiors | Higher cost than single-material doors | Build-up, U-value, finish warranty |
| Wood-effect on aluminium | Low maintenance, modern designs | Grain is a print, not real timber | Finish type, UV resistance, colour match |
| Wood-effect on steel | Security-led specs | Weight, edge protection | Coating, corrosion protection |
